old.quilt
i love scouring flea markets for old quilt tops and child-size quilts. they are great for home-decor and other projects. one child-size quilt i found - i mended in spots and removed the torn-up inner lining - then used it to hang above our bed as wall-decor.
recently i figured out what to do with a huge king-size quilt top that i'd been holding onto for a few years and wondered when i would ever get around to backing it and quilting it - but i have come to realize that small is what i work with best. but not wanting to cut up this amazing piece of hand-sewn artwork, i decided to turn it into a duvet cover! (basically a slip cover for a comforter). and this was much easier for me to make in order to get it onto my bed than to have it sitting in a case waiting for a quilting session. i had a king-size flat sheet and just sewed the quilt top to the edges of the sheet (lay it out first and pin it, to keep it even - sew right sides together) - then for the 4th side of the quilt - sew it but leave a 1/3 size opening in the middle of this sewn side - so you can slip your duvet/comforter into it. (**per a quilter.friend - stitch an extra sheet of fabric behind the quilt top to stabilize it and prevent it from falling apart during overuse.)
voila! easy, beautiful quilt cover without all the fuss of having to quilt it! :)
